About us

We are a completely independent Shotokan school. Our doors are open to anyone regardless of political affiliation. Come with an open mind to practice traditional Shotokan Karate-Do. Follow proper dojo etiquette and enjoy the workout. Owner\operator Sensei Robert McDonough lives in Rancho Santa Margarita and started his own dojo here a little over nine years ago. Being a calculus tutor to put himself through college and a lifetime Martial Artist, Mr. McDonough has been able to combine his skills to teach Karate. Starting with zero students and classes only two days a week, we have expanded to a full time thriving Dojo.  Mr. McDonough has studied Karate all over the world. Not only in Japan, where he still continues his training, but also in Italy, France,  Hungary, Russia and throughout the U.S.A., becoming both a National and International champion. Your choice of instructor will be the most important decision you make in regards to your Karate. Do not make it lightly or base it on superficial things such as distance from your home. Sensei may be part of your life or your child's life for years to come, its worth the extra five minute drive. Remember the most important thing is how good the instructor can make you, not how good they are. You need a Sensei not a bodyguard." The test of a good teacher is not how many questions he can ask his students that they will answer readily, but how many questions he will inspire them to ask him which he finds difficult to answer"

What do I need to Start?  Not much. Always best to call first (949 292-1097) and let Sensei know you are coming. Everyone is welcome to watch a class or several. First class may be attended at no cost to see if Karate is for you. Just wear comfortable clothing and try and be at the dojo at least fifteen minutes early. Very little is expected of beginners. Everyone progresses at a different rate and you should not feel as though you need to keep up or compete with any of the other students. In Karate you do not get "cut" or "make the team". It is for all people, even those who may have trouble in other organized athletic activities.
